Aint love grand
02.14.05 (8:07 am)   [edit]

I read a blog entry recently which made me angry because it was patronising, so I left a comment. Below is the reply to my comment;

“i did not write this to make people mad... it is just what was on my mind...
In Leviticus 18:22=Do not practice homosexuality; it is a detestable sin.
Also read Romans chapter one verses 26-27.
what i meant by "not judging them" by that i don't treat them like slaves or dis them in their face.. i just tell them my opinion and give them love (the love i am/was talking about is in first Corinthians chapter 13...
when i said that "not to embrace them" meaning not to allow you to marry one another...
i'm still going to pray because EVERYONE needs God and i'm gonna pray for you even though i don't even know you..
i don't expect to change anyones mind about homo's.. i want people to know that there are people that don't agree with everyone.. and that God loves EVERYONE no matter what people think he will ALWAYS love us.. we just have to come back to him and follow his way..
God Bless”

Am I lucky or what!! I have a narrow minded, ill educated bigot praying for me.

I wouldn't necessarily call this person narrow-minded if they are OPEN-MINDED enough to pray for people and accept the fact that people have different opinions. This person seems to stand up for what they believe in, and as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, I don't see the wrong in what they said. --Not meant to offend you in anyway though....

*laugh* Atleast they're praying, no? This world is just a little insane and contradicting one person at a time. :)
*hugs*
A Very Happy Valentines Day To Andaloo and Andaloo!

Leviticus is wonderful. "OK, YOU THERE, WITH THE FLAT NOSE - YOU'RE DOOMED. SORRY. AND YOU. YES, YOU! YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING SUPERFLUOUS. OUT!"

"Whosoever he be of thy seed throughout their generations that hath a blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
18: For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or anything superfluous"

"Oh, damn you, Dad!"

"STONE HIM!"

"For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him."

You can have a lot of fun with this.

On the other hand, Leviticus is interesting for other reasons. An anthropologist friend tells me that the whole 'eye for an eye' thing, and the other laws of Leviticus, were a huge advance on what went before. Previously, it was not unusual for punishment to be way out of proportion to the 'crime', and these laws were an attempt to create a society where there was less violence and brutality. And a lot of the food laws reveal a primitive understanding of hygiene, and thus were an attempt to prevent disease.

So historically they're interesting, and tolerant for the times (everything is relative!). But to take them as a guide to modern life... well... I wonder if your little friend is also killing cattle for you as 'sin offerings' and sprinkling the blood thereof upon the altar round about?

BWAH!

I read that myself, if it's the one I'm thinking of, and as usual could do nothing but shake my head. I chose not comment, because I avoid the "jesus freaks" and their threats of hell and damnation.

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the bible it says something about judging others, and that's supposed to be god's job, not there's. So when we all show up at the gate, we'll see who he lets in and who he doesn't. So there.

Would be clearer to read the blog and your comment, but perhaps that is more then ought to be shared here. I think many 'Christians' struggle with the concept of upholding their beliefs as they've interpreted from the bible (and it's all personal interpretation) - some of these beliefs serve at cross purposes. The very idea of embracing fellow humans being without judgement seems to uproot that whole 'homosexuals are bad' theory, but then, what do I know... I just live here. It sounds like this person is trying to make it fit. I find myself with one question on my mind when I come across people like this...

'Who made God?'

In my opinion, Leviticus should be pulled from the Bible.

But enough of that!
Happy Day to you and the one you love!

..but i am praying for you and i am not going to reject my faith

Oy! An atheist myself, devotion to the bible (and its well documented it-even-bores-me-to-mention-it reinterpetation each era) makes me laugh mockingly and shake my head in pity. I try to keep this to myself, and tell myself, 'Self, this person MEANS well, and is just trying to get thru this difficult life with some kind of guidance.' But it's really difficult, sometimes, to be graceful toward them.

For myself, I wish the two Andaloos a fantabulous VD (uhm, Valentine's Day), and look fwd to the day when the state of Cali gets its shit back together and recognizes the marriages in my hometown of San Francisco; when that day arrives, you (plural) are invited to SF where I'll actually try to catch the bouquet!

Uhm, or you could just go to Canada. or the Netherlands. or Denmark. Or...

I’m not mad, but I was angry. Please don’t think I was suggesting you should reject your faith, I would never do that.

If religion is considered a set of guidelines by which to live your life to the fullest, then it has to be a good thing. But what I have a problem with is when people take those guidelines and adopt them word for word, or adapt them to the detriment of others. In certain countries, other religions, those people are thought of as extremists and therefore dangerous. Shouldn’t religion be about love, and not punishment and hate? Shouldn’t understanding be more important than fear?

It would seem you’re under the impression that our sexuality is a choice. Do you remember choosing to be heterosexual? I doubt you do, just like I don’t remember choosing to be gay. It’s inherent, it’s part of us. My being gay is as normal to me as your sexuality is to you. Look beyond the sex; if two people love each other and want to spend the rest of their time together, isn’t that wonderful? Please don’t pity gay people, we neither want nor deserve it, but above all it’s patronising.

Did you know that there are over 60,000 known errors in the translations of the bible? That means that for all we know, the bible said "Do not practise sock darning, it is a detestable sin"

There are actually no translation errors in the Bible. But that assumes that you read it in Hebrew. The problem with Leviticus 18:22 is that it's incomplete. The explanation is in the Tamud, not the Torah. But Christians never adopted the Talmud as a religious text, probably because it shows how Christianity is in conflict with what is written in the Torah.

But from what is there, it does not contain a blanket statement against practicing homosexuality. It does have a statement against a man lying with a man as with a woman, and says that it's a sin. What that means, exactly, is open to interpretation, so for anybody to give an interpretation and insist that that's what the Bible literally says is just plain wrong.

Abomination in the Christian sense is not consistent with Jewish interpretations of this Jewish text. Sins against God are considered either rebellions against God, or things that are ceremonially unclean. There will be religious people who will argue either way, but the interpretation that people who engage in certain types of homosexual behavior are doing it to rebel against God strikes me as having little credibility. So it's essentially saying that anal sex is considered unclean, unless you can think of another way that a man can lie with a man as with a woman. If you take it TOO literally, then it means that a man should not put his penis in another man's vagina. In that case, I know of nobody who is violating this.

Whether this means that religious people should disapprove of homosexuality is open to interpretation, but they cannot claim that Leviticus states that all homosexuality is condemed there or that it states anywhere that it's an abomination. That's unquestionably an interpretation, not an actual biblical statement. And to say that this refers to lesbians at all is beyond any reasonable interpretation.

A better interpretation is that it may be sinful, just as a Jew eating shellfish or driving a car on Saturday might be sinful. It's not the type of thing that anybody will rot in hell for, assuming of course that it's consensual.

being that it seems to be an important issue to you i really dont think its a bit churlish...and alot of people do confuse the two!!how is it churlish...i mean to accuse someone of hating you or any other homosexual is absurd, unless they really are that way and hateful of people. i think its important to distinguish and point out! but hey whatever, sorry if you don't feel that way. and i wasnt insulting lynne or being insulting towards anyone, but if we are insulting then its insulting to me to have people think that just because a christian thinks homosexuality is a sin they automatically hate the person. yes christianity is about love and i do have love for people, all people and compassion too. i dont hate people because of who or what they are.
