Free speech costs thought
01.31.05 (9:08 am)   [edit]

You can guarantee that sooner or later everybody who writes a blog posts something either entitled “why do I blog?” – or it crops up somewhere in a post about another subject.

I’ve read blogs where the writer says they want their thoughts on certain events accessible for their kids to read in years to come. Others use their blog as a way to offload all the daily crap that we all need to get rid of from time to time. The reasons are as varied as the blogs. For my part, I think I write this because I’m genuinely interested in how people live their lives around the world, and it only seems fair to contribute something in return. Of course we all like to receive comments, and it’s these which create an atmosphere of friendship or community. I had an email last week from somebody who used to post on tblog, but doesn’t any longer. She was talking about tblog and mentioned that it was one of the few sites which has a community feel to it, and as such appealed to many people who blog out of loneliness. At first I felt defensive when I read her words, but after I’d thought about it realised there was some truth in what she said…for some of us.

I used to post on another site, where somebody used to leave me (and a lot of other people) pointless, hurtful comments. I talked to a friend about it and she pointed out that he was perfectly within his rights to do this. By clicking “publish this post” we’re inviting anybody to read and comment on what we write, no matter what. It’s a sad fact there will always be people out there who want to abuse a system or simply get enjoyment from pissing others off.

A couple of days ago I read comments left on a blog here which epitomised the abuse of communities such as this.  To say the vile ramblings of the commenter were hateful is an understatement, but they were addressed with dignity. Nuff said.

Why am I writing this? At times like this I need to remind myself that anybody has the right to comment, whatever their views. I also hope that this might be read by somebody who finds it fun or clever to leave comments which are meant to hurt or demean, and that they may think twice. Disagree, debate but think about what you’re saying. Finally, to the person who received the filthy comments; I applaud you.

Yeah, it's a shame that some people feel the need to insult others in order to boost themselves. I guess they don't realize that it doesn't make them a better person. I haven't had any bashers yet, fortunately. But I will try not to lower myself to their level if I do, as temped as I may be to do so.
I do this (blog) because, like you, I like to see how other people live. And sometimes it makes me feel better about myself and my situations to know that other people have it worse than me. I suppose that could be considered using other people's miseries to make myself feel better, but it is the truth. Makes me appreciate what I have all that much more I guess.
Tblog definitely has more of a community feel to it than other sites I've visited. They just don't seem as friendly as this. And I must say I've met a lot of interesting people here. It reminds me of how AOL used to be in the beginning. I'm glad I stayed here when so many others left.

I thought you blogged so that you would be.

(Was it me who got the nasty comments? I didn't notice any, but people can be quite rude to me without me noticing until my friends get indignant. "How could you let him say that to you?" they ask me, and I reply, "Say what to me?" It is possible that I am stupid.)

Oh, I think I know who got some rotten comments, but others have received worse. I, too, am guilty of posting thoughts that may or may not be construed as hurtful, but it was done in a spirit of wanting to prevent women from exploiting themselves. I guess I should just not look, and mind my own business. Hateful diatribe is another thing, and the threats and degradation offered to some other bloggers is truly astounding and distressing. I believe the salient objective of blogging is to form a sense of community with people from all different walks of life, in different locales. I do try to post interesting and helpful advice, tempered with a little risque gossip about the B !!! :)

bravo maestro! Personally, I blog because I believe that I write better than I speak. When I am alone here with my thoughts I am able to draw upon a much richer vocabulary than when engaged in conversation in real time. I don't focus on the response and miss the statement. I can be a better listener by reading rather than listening. I sometimes worry if my "I am paying rapt attention to each and every word" expression doesn't come off as a blank stare. But if I am reading what is written, and reply to same, there is no doubt that I have read it. Also there is not a doubt about my intentions, that is, that I read it willingly and freely. And, to be honest, there are times when my mind is drifting away and I hear blah blah blah while in my head I am composing an image of what the person's ear lobe resembles to assign it to a character I am creating.

Something tells me anybody who was stupid enough to flame around your blog would spend the rest of their days looking over their shoulder and waiting for the unmistakeable roar of a Harley.

LOL No it wasn't you, but you're on the hit list so you best be polite (especially to me) for a while.

I got fed-up being, so decided to be nosey instead.

After deleting my third response to you I've decided not to say anything. (Long silence) I know you know what I think anyway. Oh, but as for Ms. B - that's just open season!

You never fail to make me smile! I doubt anybody would see your "blank stare" as anything other than complete concentration. BTW my left ear lobe would be perfect for a tall, mucular Italian character.

I like my little community at tblog, and I don't consider myself to be lonely. I think it's very cool to cyber-converse with people all over the world.

As for the rotten comments - some people just seem compelled to do that, especially in a place where they are essentially anonymous. I think it emboldens them. The best thing to do is just ignore them, or answer politely if need be. You are indeed correct - we open ourselves up to anything as soon as we hit the publish button. Fortunately most of it is good!

Blessings!

p.s. I blog because it's the only type of journal I've stuck with for any length of time, and typing allows me to write much more than I could by hand. I'm glad people read it, but my life would go on if they didn't :)

I began my blog not long ago and have yet to experience the community feel you speak of. I also have not received any negative or rude comments, so I can't really speak from experience about anything you said. However, it made me excited to have that community feeling and all the comments about why people blog gave me something to think about. I have more reasons than I had yesterday, and so I'm going to be more proactive about it. And all because andaloo made a quick comment about my blog about my cheap used car advertisement.
