Neo Minimalism
11.18.04 (7:28 am)   [edit]

I just read something on SofP’s blog which said, “pick up the nearest book to you and turn to page eighteen…” It was a bit of fun, but in doing it I suddenly noticed the amount of stuff on my desk.

If FlyLady was to come here it would be dusters at ten paces. If I’m honest I like my clutter, (please note if you call it clutter it makes it OK, only FlyLady prophets call it mess). Living in an old house means clutter adds character, but living in a small, old house (though perfectly formed) means there aren’t the places to stuff the clutter anyway. So here are the essentials which adorn my desk as I write. N.B. Minimalists may find the following disturbing.

Laptop computer: Used to watch the news, watch DVD’s, listen to the radio, listen to CD’s and all the other net stuff.

Land phone: The most basic model available but still looks like the flight deck of concord. I don’t know how to use any of the functions because I don’t want to.

Cell phone:

My appointment book for work:

A freezer bag:

My wallet:

“The Echo” – Minette Walters:

“El Diario De Bridget Jones” – Helen Fielding (translated into Spanish by Néstor Busquets)

“Maybe The Moon” – Armistead Maupin

CD’s – “Queer As Folk” soundtrack, “Il Divo”, “Ojú”, “Songs In The Key Of Life” (mostly put back into their cases)

Moroccan pot: Contains all those things which might make the place look untidy.

Large clock in oak case:

Bonsai tree: Looking sick

An orchid: Looking healthy

Lamp: Oak spindle

Figure of a Japanese fisherman:

Cup of coffee: Hot

Cup of tea: Cold

I have no idea what the freezer bag is doing on the desk, so in an attempt at Neo Minimalism I will bin it. There, tidy now.

I'm not going to tell you what's on my desk. The Fly Lady would put me on her hit list.

However, I do want to know where you got that absolutely GIGANTIC Moroccan pot.

Oh, quick! It's actually very small, well quite small...OK so it's slightly big, but not big enough to fit a freezer bag into. OK I admit, it's huge and it's so full the freezer bag fell out.

It's OK you can tell all here, you're amongst friends. The FlyLady prophets will turn a blind eye.

Hah! If any of you saw MY desk right now I would cringe and you would repossess my feather duster. There are: 1 computer, 2 sewing machines, 7 baskets, a calendar, my daytimer, a glass of tea (old) a glass of wine (pretty good) a magnifying glass (very old) a bit of ribbon, a pillow case, several legal pads with construction notes, floppy discs, receipts, and a box of kleenex. Happy now??????

Oh goodness. you are the best.

I have to admit, though, that when I first read that you had Moroccan pot on your desk, my first thought was "I wonder if it is as good as California pot" oops. Not that kind of pot.

Two sewing machines? Is one for high days and holidays?

What no clutter? Go on, leave your shoes in the kitchen, a slice of pizza in the bathroom...you'll feel SO liberated. Honest ;)

It's better, and best kept in the fridge.

I had to remove myself from Flyladys screeching email reminders that I hadn't done my "zone" Poor FlyLady, she would have cardiac arrest if she saw my house on an average day!! let's see...3 kids + one husband + working mother = mess. So, 6 kids home for holidays, = double the mess! I have to love it, though!! otherwise I would be in a lovely minimalist, but padded, room!!

True confession - I thought the same thing! First thing I thought of was Thai sticks.

One is a serger which stitches over the edges to keep them from fraying and the other is my all purpose (except serging, obviously) sewing machine. There is another in a closet (tredle) and another decorative stitch machine on a shelf below. You knew I quilted, right?

clutter is cool as long as you know where everything is.

it actually sounds like you have a pretty chic(sp?) system worked out there.
