11.22.03 (8:15 pm)   [edit]
So, I've been thinking about privacy, personal space etc, because of something that happened yesterday. As a northern European I found the Spanish attitude to personal space a bit difficult to cope with at first. For example; You find a completely empty beach, strip off, slime up and shut down. Then you spot a few dots on the horizon (a Spanish family coming along the beach), and they trudge through the heat of the day for miles to set up camp RIGHT next to you. I now realise that they think they're doing you a favour..."look at that poor man all alone (even though he's tall, muscular and probably Italian), lets go and keep him company." They will never speak unless you start the conversation, because THAT would intrude on your privacy. No, instead they have this amazing ability not to see you for the rest of the day.

Yesterday
I was in Granada and found myself with free time. I decided to go to a cyber café and catch up on the latest happenings in blogland. I don't know what I expected of a cyber café, but it wasn't what I found. A big room, dimly lit, with computers dotted around the walls. I paid my €1 for an hour (very cheap I thought) and opened up M-Blog. Within a couple of minutes I was surrounded by people asking what I was doing and EVEN if I'd translate it into Spanish for them! At first I felt a bit angry about my total lack of privacy, but by the end of the hour we were all laughing at the comments left on my blog. Don't you think sometimes that personal space is just too big?

I value my personal space and privacy pretty highly, but some people have a way of making you just open up and feel relaxed. I think you're one of those people :)

Well i'm really funny and awkward about my personal space......i'm not snotty or anything~just uncomforatable when someones too close......I get very self conscious. I wonder if I smell bad or if they see all my flaws when close. I'm funny about being touched~i'm jumpy and creeped out. I dunno~I'm just strange like that I guess!

Man, some days I need a big old bubble around me, and others I love the closeness. What we need is a customisable sign around our necks. Something like "No Closer Than 10 Feet Today Please". Or "Don't Even THINK Of Looking At Me"...

Personal space and privacy??? What's that? Even when the kids are at school and hubby's at work. It's either the damn phone or hubby & co, demanding coffee...or the cat!

I have ZERO personal space with my friends and roomies! *Grin* I crawl into their beds (no naughty thoughts kiddos! *grin*) in the morning and we cuddle on the couch to watch movies and I "molest" or pet my friends all the time.

Strangers are a different story. I try to act like they don't exist - If I don't see them they can't see me type thing! *Grin*

Personal space can be a touch issue (no pun intended) I have no problem with kids climbing all over me (my own or strange ones I pick up at the park- just kidding) or being close. But when it comes to adults- especially strangers, keep your distance people! TTFN

Guess it is the whole can you expect privacy in public places and since they are becoming less private (CCTV etc) can it be legislated for? I've noticed the same thing on my travels - how different cultures interact in 'public'... Got me thinking anyway:o)

You know what I dislike? When I am in a queue (impressed?) at the grocery store, and am writing a check, and someone is up on top of me. Like they want to check my balance or something.

But at a nude beach - my issue is only cameras and photos taken without permission.

I like my space. But for the right person I'd blow that all to hell and back. I'd be all..."how YOU doin?"

I read this post of yours ages ago, but I just re-read it. You say that people in the cyber-cafe wanted you to translate, and were laughing @ the posts left on your (M-Blog). So, question: Did you talk about ME?! Me Me Me!!! hahaha...
