Early lessons
10.14.04 (11:15 am)   [edit]

I was getting dressed yesterday and through the open window I could hear the local kids walking to school. There was a tiny little voice which kept saying “one, two, three…one, two, three…one, two, three.” I looked out to see a boy so small his mother was carrying his school bag for him. Their conversation went like this;

Her: “You are so Clever! Miss Pilar will be very impressed, but can you remember what comes after three?”

Him: “Seventeen.”

Her: (Laughing) Not really. Try four. One, two, three, four.”

Him: “One, two, three, seventeen, four. That’s what Miss Pilar said.”

They both walked past laughing, and I carried on getting ready with a big smile on my face. I had to work through the siesta so came home early for a quick snack. I could hear the kids coming out of school and making the usual excited din, but slowly getting closer was one kid who definitely wasn’t happy. As the wailing got louder I recognised the same mother’s voice from the morning.

Her: “It doesn’t matter. Come on, you’ll feel better when you’ve had some lunch.”

Him: (Now sobbing) “I hate that Miss Pilar, she thinks she knows everything.”

Numbers are odd things. Maybe Miss Pilar comes from a different universe, where 17 comes after 3. And the little boy and his mother come from the universe where 4 comes after 3.

No wonder the little boy is upset. It's all too confusing.

Ahhh! To be of an age where things like 17 and 4 could break your heart. Getting older means being able to laugh at the things that once broke your heart.

Do you know why six is afraid of seven?
Because Seven Eight Nine.

Thankyou. That was a really charming story. I am just sitting here with a big stupid grin on my face from reading it.

Its the little things like this in life that make you smile :)
Pilar is one of my favourite names :p
I'd once decided to name my kid after it! *laugh*
Did you know 5 + 5 = 7? or even 5 + 5 = 2? :)
Think about it ;) I'l drop by with the answer soon.

Nothing can make you smile like the things that little kids say!
When my cousin was 5 she spent a good hour looking around the house trying to find the ducks. It turns out her mother had told her they had heating ducts in the house.

Did you know 5 + 5 = 7? or even 5 + 5 = 2? :) <- correction to the second calculation. the answer should be 4.
if you hold up the number 5 in a mirror..it becomes two. *grin* 5 + 5(2) = 7. and 2 5's reversed become 4. *nods* fun.

yikes! i did type the answer out..it didn't appear. darn
anyway...the second calculation should equal to 4. i made a slight error in the last one. apologies
so:
5 + 5 = 7 or even 5 + 5 = 4.
when you reflect a 5 in the mirror, it becomes 2. *grin* 5 + 5(2) = 7. or 2 5's reflected equal 4!
okay so its cheating..but it does give things a new twist *grin*
