What's for dinner?
10.09.04 (12:13 pm)   [edit]

Whoever gets home first cooks dinner here in Palacio Andaloo. I got home late last night after a couple of days away, and dinner was under way. “It’s just something bland”, said Paul, and I remembered it was Friday. The caterers at Paul’s school often have “surprise” on the menu for Friday lunch. In other words they wing it with whatever ingredients they have left over from the week. Yesterday they served up fish wrapped in ham and cheese, with mashed potatoes and salads. My stomach turned at the thought of it. “Oh it gets worse. One of the salads was cucumber in yoghurt, but either they didn’t check the yoghurts or they went all out for the surprise factor…the yoghurt was banana flavour.”  Its always good to come home after time in the real world.

They do that sort of thing here all the time. You go to buy a sandwich, and discover that a strawberries and fake cream sandwich is considered a valid food option.

The other day I ordered a salad and as well as oil and vinegar dressing they'd put blueberry jam on it. That was fairly surprising, too, and scraping it off was tricky.

maybe they were working on the principle that foods that are the same shape should work well together!

you say it like it's something BAD! My Turkish roommate puts yoghurt on EVERYTHING....but got mad when she grabbed my VANILLA yoghurt! not my fault! oh, and crushed red pepper, too! xoxox

I always encourage my children to develop culinary skills. I figure, they will eventually learn and then maybe someone will cook for me!Sometimes the results are a little less than stellar. My youngest once made "Hay Soup" yup, that's what she used!!

Thanks. I just spit water all over the PC. BANANA yogurt? How revolting! But the ham and cheese fish.... I would have been tempted to do something painful to the one what dreamt up that abhorrent creation!

oh, i just remembered...one time after the holidays, i tried to make "welsch rabbit" using some cheddar cheese that had wine swirled through it! Sam got home and said WTF is that!!!! LOL! it was too disgusting to look at! and he was always the meat and potatoes kind of guy anyway! xoxox

Sounds like Monday night around here... when I get rid of all the leftovers in the fridge before doing the weekly shopping. It's amazing the stuff you can come up with when you don't think about it too hard! ;)

My son loves banana yogurt? He likes it with blueberries in it...

Bon apetite!

Oh goodness. If I were Paul, I might take a brown bag lunch with me on Fridays. Whew.

To have things "considered valid food stuff" sounds to me like having to take responsibility, that will NEVER do! What would people like Kentucky Mc King do if they were held accountable for ingrediants? However, I do say what this world needs is more blueberry jam!

I think "when you don't think about it" are the operative words here. Banana yoghurt and mashed spuds? mmmmm

The problem is sometimes the "surprise" is worth eating. I for one would not turn my nose up at icecream and fries! (French, not freedom.)

PLEASE do! Mimi and I are sisters, in the event that you did not know. Our mother was a really good cook. But the couple of times she screwed up - she REALLY screwed up. There was an incident with Boston Baked Beans.... and cohog chowder. I shudder to remember them. Oh, and cranberry meat loaf! Now I am sure that sister will chime in with more, or different ones.

Yoghurt on everything sounds good to me as long as it's plain or Greek (is there a difference)? Sorry Mimi, got to say the Welsh Rarebit with red wine sounds like a stomach turner. ACCCKKKK! ;)
