Buying books and eating house bricks
08.10.04 (9:39 am)   [edit]

I was completely confident that the Greeks would come up with the goods and have everything finished in time for the start of the Olympics. Their approach might be different, but not only was I confident they’d get there I’m also sure it will be spectacularly successful. Seeing as I don’t have a television I’ll be relying on watching Olympic highlights online, I think the BBC are covering it. The one thing I’d like to watch live is the opening ceremony. I’ve watched events online with “Tiscali” before and have to say the quality was poor. Does anybody know of a site showing the opening ceremony live online?

Yesterday was the other Mr. Andaloo’s birthday and he wanted to stock up on some new books. After an early start we headed off to Fnac (a brilliant store, but sadly a four hour round drive) to re-stock our book shelves. Amongst others I managed to get a copy of The Da Vinci Code so as to keep up with S of P’s cultural clippings.

Some friends said that seeing as we were spending the morning choosing English books they’d do an English dinner for us. It was a lovely evening, but OMG I felt like I’d eaten a house brick after. I know English food isn’t exactly up there with Haute Cuisine but there are a few gems to be had. Honest. So, we ploughed through shepherd’s pie (complete with onion gravy), apple crumble with thick custard and birthday cake. *rubs belly and groans* It was JUST like being back at school!

OOOOOHHHHH... apple crumble with custard!!!

Even better: apple & rhubarb crumble, with fresh cream AND custard AND ice cream. (You can't bend over for a while after eating it, though.)

I don't know where you can watch the opening ceremony live. Actually I don't know when the Games start. When do they start?

I thought they started on Friday - probably the best place to go is the BBC website! Joolie xxx

How wonderful! Let's start reading it together, shall we? I dare not crack it until I have produced some 10 pages of MY book however, or I am liable to get a very Zen like reproach from my darling little Zen master.... who makes me think of that monk in Kung Fu - "Grasshopper, snatch this pebble from my hand".
Many happy returns to the other Mr. Andaloo- or TwoLoops if you prefer.
I thought most English cooking consisted of grey things boiled until devoid of any flavour. When you talk Shepherd's pie are you talking lamb or beef?

I love Shepherd's pie!! How come you did not have any fish 'n' chips? ;-)

Mmm. Is there anything better than getting new books and a good dinner on the same day?

I think they start on Saturday, but I'm on holiday and have completely lost the plot!

So am I, and so have I.

The Man just informed me that soccer starts before the opening ceremony. Tomorrow, he says.

What's tomorrow? (I'm particularly confused because it's 3am.)

Twoloops says thanks...(great name!)

I started reading IT today. At one point I was smiling to myself and Twoloops asked what was so funny? The thing is, there are lots of French names (so far) and I find myself reading it in the style of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau!

My mother (bless her) can boil all colour, taste and goodness out of ANY food. Maybe that's why I turned out to be a foodie? I have to say though, if there's one thing I miss about the old country it's the cosmopolitanism. (Did I just make that word up?) In UK you can now get food from anywhere in the world, it's one big food fest! :)

I'm told that curry is now the "national dish" of UK rather than fish 'n' chips. I REALLY miss Indian food!!!!

Indian food is not as popular here. Maybe you are just going to have start making your own!!

Hey, i think i may have read The Davinci code! I think it was good... I can't remember. I've read so many books that all the titles start to sound the same.

Better than apple crumble is pear and date crumble. Yummmyy.....

I can't wait for the Olympics... yes I am one of those people! But I can't help myself!

My hubs loves sheperds pie... Me just give me the apple crumble, no custard, thank you!

Hmmm, I'm in the mood to read and eat...

I'm starving at the moment and can feel that English cuisine brick as though I just swallowed it! lol. I hope someone comes up with a solution to your Olympic plight. :)
