It's better not to know
08.06.04 (9:40 am)   [edit]

It’s a standing joke that I’m dangerous with Money. I never know how much I have in my wallet, I couldn’t tell you how much a cup of coffee costs. I leave such details to others while I blindly stroll through life getting ripped off at every turn. I’m happy in the twilit financial ignorance that is my life, or was till this morning. We received a telephone bill. I heard the other (present) Mr. Andaloo say “wow that’s cheap, we obviously didn’t call many people over the last couple of months.” The bill was for €69. I started reading through it and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The calls came to a total of €9, the rest, a massive €60 was line rental and tax. I had NO idea!

I am with you on the total acceptance of fate where things like telephone bills are concerned. What can you do to change it by fretting over it? They are not going to back down and say ok, you are right, that tax charge is an outrage. Just like they won't do that at the gas pump so why do I care if driving across town will save me 20 cents on a fill up? I have no time for such stuff and nonsense.

That's ¥8000! You pay more for line rental and tax than we do in 'expensive' Japan!

Actually I'm not sure what we pay (I just pay it, you don't think I look at the numbers, do you?) but I think it's somewhere in the region of ¥3000.

Calls, even local calls, are charged by the minute, though, so if you talk a lot on the phone it can add up fairly quickly.

(Hold on... that's monthly, right?)

I am just like you about things like that andaloo. I dont even look at my phone bill anymore. It is always around $50 and the phone company just deducts it from my checking account. I dont even have to send in a payment.

That's pretty high. What do you get for that amount of money? Does it include high speed Internet or something?

Where I live, there are choices. I can pick a phone company for voice calls, or if I have high speed Internet (through the phone company or cable TV company or anybody else) I can add a VOIP box for about $15/month USD. That allows me to make unlimited calls to the US and Canada, and places such as the UK are about 3 cents per minute. (Somewhere around 2 pence or so.) And I can always take my box with me as long as I'm going somewhere with an Internet connection. So if I go to Tibet, then all my calls to the US are free, and people can still call me using my local number.

The catch is that if you live in a place where there are no choices for any of this, it won't help.

Since writing I've had it all explained. €60 is for 2 months line rental + tax. However, in that charge we get a 15 minute call (after 8pm) anywhere in Europe per day. All other calls are charged by the minute. We also pay €31 per month for an ADSL line. I have no idea anymore if this is expensive or cheap. Until recently there was no choice but the monopolies commision jumped in so hopefully things will get cheaper (still?).

I haven't seen a phone bill in about 2 years - i have it all come automatically out of my bank account. So i could be paying for $2 of phone calls and a $45 dancing-midget entertainment fee. It's nice to be oblivious to the price of things. You're onto a good thing here!

Oh, why bother figuring it out now? I'm perfectly happy being ripped off here and there. It beats the alternative (shudder, shudder). Bills shmills. Pay and go, just pay and go. lol.

That would be comparative to what we pay here (though I didn't figure out exact percentages, too much work). I looked at our most recent phone bill (which includes our DSL), and so much of it just goes to the basic service and tax. YUCK. I guess it's just the price we pay for the conveniences of modern life!

I'm not the best with money, but I must say that it would behoove me to pay closer attention now.

Cheers!

I know this is outrageous of me, but you *do* keep adding "the current" or "the present" to any mention of Other Mr. Andaloo. It leads me to wonder if he changes regularly, frequently, seldom, or maybe just once a long time ago....? It also makes for a nice mystery about the fate of past Messrs. Andaloo... Maybe it isn't just *money* you're not safe around? =;-D.

Sorry, I just couldn't hold that back any longer!
