I had a TRS-80 with 4 kilobytes of RAM, no harddrive, and a recently purchased 5.25" disk drive. The modem was 300 bits per second and you had to actually take the handset of your phone and velcro it to the modem. There was no web, but you could FTP and archie different universities on the net. You could leave messages on the BBS like a forum. There were a few newsgroups devoted to things I wasn't really interested in. I was hooked. I am now so connected that I work to be not connected. I turn my phone off. I ignore the doorbell. But I sign on the computer every day. posted by: billlyryan (reply) post date: 07.30.04 (2:35 pm) Can I just come there and live in your backyard??? Do you have an arbor? One a them things that have all that nature stuff hanging off it? I don't know how we all got so wired, and me a luddite and all. Do you think if we started a rogue state of bloggers, we'd all get along face to face? I still really like to talk to people, but I want to talk to NICE PEOPLE. That isn't too much to ask, is it? posted by: Mimi (reply) post date: 07.31.04 (6:06 am) Reply to: librarianguish i like nice people too...so let's talk, shall we? posted by: lynne (reply) post date: 08.01.04 (6:41 am) I dont think I would want to live in a cave. But, the idea of staying in one for a little while sounds nice. And guess what, I can if I want to! http://www.andalucia.com/cavehotel/home.htm |
