"The hills are alive..."
06.15.04 (8:44 am)   [edit]
Once a year sleepy little Jimena de la Frontera comes alive to the sound of music . The programme for this year’s music festival has just been released, and the line-up looks fantastic! The three big names this year are Joan Manuel Serrat, Paco de Lucía and Chavela Vargas, not to mention lots of flamenco, jazz and classical concerts.

This is one happy country bumpkin!

Oooh. that sounds wonderful :)

Whenever I hear that song "The hills are alive" it always makes me think of that joke. "The hills are alive? Sounds like a horror movie!"

(The Sound of Music. Blecch.. I wish the Nazi's captured those saccharine kiddies.)

Anyway, I just checked out the website for the program. Sadly, the listings don't tell what classical pieces will be played. Any idea?

Gawd! REAL flamenco is un-freakin-believable! Great to watch! Every year, San Francisco has the "Ethnic Dance Festival" with many programs over about three weeks. I've seen a performance or two of flamenco dancers at that festival.. Incluyendo Rosa Montoya (and her troupe) with some guy -- I can't remember his name -- was it Roberto Amaral? Anyway, fan-freakin-tastic. I don't know which is better: flamenco or tango. Hmm... tough call.

For me it's tango every time. SOOO passionate and sexy! I always thought flamenco sounded passionate until my Spanish was good enough to understand what was being sung (wailed). Its a bit like calypso...you make the words up as you go along. The theme is always lost love, but as always nothing here is done by halves.
E.G. "She was my liiiiiife, my luuuuurv, I would kiiiiiiiiiil myself before I let anooooooooooother man near her. I may die. She left meeeeeee. Oh Seville, my home, my sacred heart you treat me sooooooooooooooooooo cruelly. But now I need a beeeeeer.

It lacks the atmosphere, but you get the gist ;)

Wish I could physically hear the music! And be there in person . . . the most I'm going to be able to do (traveling-wise) for now is a quick trip to Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida! have a great time :-)
