Waiting

I’m not sure if I’m breaking any copyright rules here, hope not.

I recently bought the above postcard. I like black and white photography, especially when it’s high contrast. I loved the composition of this pic, it somehow felt quirky and made me smile. A few days later I was scanning some documents and decided to scan the postcard into the computer. I couldn’t believe what appeared (the above pic). I hadn’t seen the boy in the original photo! I see him there now, just, but he’s nowhere as clear on the original as he is on the scanned image. It’s stopped looking quirky and seems a bit sinister now.

There's a painting by Degas called Interior that comes to mind when I look at your postcard. The main subject of the painting is a woman dressing in a barely lit room... but in the shadows you can see a man leaning against the wall watching her. Depending on your frame of mind, the work can be seen as either quite beautiful and intimate or truly disturbing. Either way, I like the multiple layers of it in the same way that this postcard appeals to me.

Thank goodness you scanned it, eh?

I love it. I love the way the story of the picture changes when you see the boy.

It has also inspired my next blog post.

That must have been a little creepy, to suddenly have a person appear in a photo where there wasn't one before...

Boy, he sure is looking right at the camera, eh? As sinister as this picture appears, I bet he's really thinking, 'Man, that woman can gab for ages. When are we going to the park?!'

Ooo, that's kind of creepy!
It's kind of like those stories of people who take rolls of film to get developed and find images of ghosts in them...

I found it a bit disconcerting at first. But look at it a little longer, and you see a little boy just patiently waiting for his mom "to get off the phone, already!"

Freaky! If you look closely you can make out another face above the boys head.

Well, that is a bit strange, isn't it? Dark and sinister.
