Moral dilemma, or goons go shopping
05.29.04 (3:33 pm)   [edit]
We need to create some shade on the terrace (which is on the roof) so that we don’t spend another summer cowering indoors during sunlight hours and trying to convince each other that “pale and interesting” is the new “tan”, so off we went for our now weekly visit to Leroy Merlin. Eventually we chose the covering we wanted (Note: two men discussing the various shades of bamboo in a hardware store can draw quite an audience…I know.) Anyway, we loaded up the trolley with rolls of bamboo and various sundry items, paid and went off to find where we’d abandoned the car. We put the back seats flat to get all the stuff in, turned round to empty the trolley…and it had gone. (Why is it that at times like this when you need to think and act fast the brain turns to mush and life goes into slow motion?) “Where’s the trolley?” I said. “I don’t know, you had it” he said. I turned round to see our Leroy Merlin trolley, complete with goodies, haring down the car park like a formula one racing car and picking up speed by the second. I set off after it at a pace reminiscent of Neil Armstrong on the moon, but before I got very far it came to a sudden stop. Thankfully a shiny white V.W. Golf prevented the trolley’s bid for the open road.

Now gentle reader, it’s moral dilemma time. There was a scratch, not huge, but a scratch nonetheless. Nobody was around, would you have left a note saying the scratch was your fault and give your phone number, or would you drive off before anybody saw you?

I would have left a note. Someone did that for me a while back and I was very grateful.

I probably would have a left a note (but then again...I don't know for sure. I'm a pretty honest person!). Someone left a note for me once after they hit my car, and I was very thankful for it.

I have to say that I have done both. I guess that means that my behavior depends a bit on my mood. But the time that I just left, it wasnt really a bad scratch. The time I left the note, no one ever called me. Maybe it was karma but my car has been dinged quite a few times in parking lots and no one has ever left a note. But then, it is just a scratch and scratches in the paint are kind of par for the course if one is actually planning on taking their car out in public. If someone had ever left a note after dinging my car, I might call them to thank them but I cant imagine actually wanting them to fork over the $5 it would cost to buy some touch up paint at the auto supply store.

Hi Andaloo- I've been away -- my mother was unexpectedly hospitalized, but she is all right now.

Catching up on your entries...

Your neighbor is a nasty old xenophobic Lusiana, and you should start greeting her with 'howdy pardner' if you greet her at all.

Yes, I probably would have left a note, altough no one has ever done the same for me.

Then there's always the alternative of writing a note that says, "My cart scratched your car, and everyone who is watching me write this note thinks that I am leaving my name and insurance information. But I'm not."

I would have left a note - if for no other reason than it would be proof for the insurance claim if there was one. Within weeks of getting my new car, someone careened into the back hatch with a bike. The damages - although they appear slight - were over $300.00 to repair.

Oh dammit!! Snowbirdarts left my answer about the note: Yes, leave a note, but write on it, "I'm leaving a note because people are watching me. I scratched your car. Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Good luck."
