High tech V's Low tech
05.06.04 (2:11 pm)   [edit]
I sometimes forget where I am. The outside world is so accessible now that I sometimes need to stop and look around me. Andalucia is a bit of a joke with the rest of Spain, it takes us a while to catch up. Andaluz people are considered insular and slow. It’s not surprising, through the Franco years Andalucia was basically cut off from the rest of Spain. There were very few roads so it was easy enough to police people’s movements and permits were needed to enter or exit the province. Starvation took far too many people. I’m not talking about the dark ages here, The General’s regime ended just twenty six years ago.

This morning I was driving down to the coast, lost in my thoughts about the hassles with my ADSL line. I had to stop in a queue of traffic but was too far back to see what was going on. Eventually we started edging forward. A man flagged me down and said that they were cutting trees around the bend. Seeing as I was the last in the queue he gave me a twig and asked me to give it to the man along the road so he’d know the road was clear for the traffic coming in the opposite direction.

Forget fighting with somebody in a Madrid call-centre about an ADSL connection, I’m so lucky to be a paying guest here in Andalucia! (But don’t quote me on that when I’m next ranting.)

Andaloo, I've had the devil's own time trying to get into your blog of late. (Somehow that doesn't read right...)

Anyway, you 'loaded' at last this morning, so I'm glad to see you again.

I don't know much about Andalusia, except that they once originated spectacularly beautiful horses. Is there a good spot on the internet (besides your own spot) to find out more?

Linda

A twig!! I find that humorous for some reason. In a cute way, of course :)

I admire the way you can appreciate things like that. A lot of people would simply have gotten angry about being in a line and they never would have taken the time to look around them or to notice the charm a place has. :)

You want to know more about Andaluz horses or Andalucia? For Andalucia go to andalucia.com
As for horses...all I know is that they have a leg in each corner and smell a lot. I'm not doing country very well yet am I? It's the Jimena de la Frontera horse and mule market this weekend (oh life is one big cultural whirl), and I intend to go with my cam. Hopefully some pics to share next week.

Me too. It's the sort of stuff that keeps your feet planted firmly on the floor :)
