Identification cards
04.26.04 (9:35 am)   [edit]
National Identity Cards are big in the British news again. It seems most people are totally opposed to the cards, and nervous that they Would infringe their civil liberties. The latest government tack is that identity cards would help curb terrorism.

When I lived in UK I too was against the idea of carrying a card, but when I became a Spanish resident had to comply and carry identification. I remember going through the application process, and the police woman laughing when she told me I had to have my finger prints taken. “Why is it that you Brit’s always cringe when you have this done?” I think it’s because it has criminal implications, but decided silence was the better response. Ten years on and carrying my identification feels as normal as carrying money. We’re asked for our cards all the time, to use a credit card, in banks, in government offices or if stopped by the Guardia Civil (which happens often). The events at La Tocha train station proves that carrying identification has made NO difference to the prevention of terrorism here.

As the weather warms up my thoughts turn to the annual hassle of the beach. Nude sunbathing is legal, as long as your carry your identity card. Huh?

Hassle of the beach?

Haha. I guess you would have to get one of those wallet things that hang around your neck for going to the beach ;) I wouldnt have that problem though because I am a prude American and there is NO WAY I would get naked on a beach with other people on it. I will confess to getting naked on a deserted Lake Michigan beach once when I was on a backpacking trip but that was different ;)

Sorry, badly worded. I meant the hassle of where to put an identity card whilst on the beach.

You can just stick the card...in your armpit :D

Oh to have that hassle again..... I used to frequent nudist resorts frequently. Having endured the hassle of where to put the accessories, I can only suggest a tote bag.

I don't see the big deal about ID cards if it means that I make all these transactions quickly and easily. Fingerprinting is another issue altogether. I don't like it. It's like asking me for a sample of my DNA to put on file in the event that I commit a crime down the road.

In Europe, it's not uncommon for people to carry passports. In the US, it's almost unheard of, and most people don't have one.

People here are opposed to a national ID card, but they have no problems with a state ID card that allows them to drive. The reality is that they are hundreds of times more likely to use it as identification than to ever have to show it to law enforcement. It has my photo on it, and my fingerprint is scanned into a database.

Where I live, there is no nude sunbathing. Actually, you can be nude from the waist up, but only if you have a penis. But it's illegal to show anybody that you have a penis. That's where the identity card comes in.

My sentiments entirely...but don't you hate those white bits? ;)

You just have to post the ID card in the "conspicuous place" and you'll be all set. Nude no more :-)

Are you denying me the rare opportunity to discuss my penis on a blog? OK.

A tote bag.... A small bag, drawstring or handled......into which one stashes tanning lotion, sunscreen, keys, lip gloss, a book and a towel.

I'm not so worried about having to carry an ID card, what I object to is having to pay for the privilege - if the government want to bring it in, they can pay for it, I already pay more than enough for a passport! Joolie xxx

Thirty five pounds I think. People will never pay out that sort of money. As for passports...I renewed at Christmas and it cost €95!
